Open any synth. Before you touch a filter, an envelope, or a reverb, there is a switch that says oscillator type.
That switch is the most important sound you'll make all session.
A waveform is a shape repeating in air pressure. That shape is the timbre before any effects. Every patch you've ever loved started here. The good news: there are really only four classical shapes. Pick the right one and the rest of the work gets easier.
The four basic shapes
A pure tone is a sine wave: one frequency, no extras. Add the right recipe of upper frequencies (harmonics) and you get the others. Square is the buzzy one. Triangle is the soft cousin of square. Sawtooth is the loudest, the brightest, the one with everything.

And then there's noise
The fifth shape isn't really a shape. White noise has every frequency at roughly equal amplitude, all at once. There's no fundamental, no pitch, just the entire spectrum hissing at you. Try it in the figure above.
That's exactly why drums need it. A snare without noise is a tom. A hi-hat without noise is silence. The metallic shimmer, the breath, the wind, the ocean: all of these are noise, sculpted by filters and envelopes. Pink and brown noise are softer flavors with more low end (we'll save those for later).
When to reach for which
The shape decides what the sound can become. A sub-bass needs no harmonics; it's pressure, not melody. A retro game lead needs to slice through anything, and the buzzy odd-harmonic content of a square does exactly that. A string pad lives or dies by how much there is to filter, and a sawtooth has it all.
Drums work differently. A kick is a sine wave that pitches down fast. A snare is a tonal "thwack" stacked with a noise burst. A hi-hat is just high-passed noise on a short envelope. Click any card to hear it. Each shows the source wave on the left and the amplitude envelope on the right.
Envelopes: shape over time
The waveform decides what one cycle sounds like. The envelope decides how the sound starts, holds, and ends. Same sawtooth wave, different envelopes: a fast attack and short decay is a pluck; a slow attack and long release is a pad; a kick is the same envelope shape pushed to the extreme: instant attack, immediate decay, almost no release. The four stages (attack, decay, sustain, release) are the rhythm and breath of every note.
Try the presets. The wave doesn't change; only the envelope does. The identity of a sound lives almost as much in time as it does in shape.
Additive: build it up
Joseph Fourier showed that any periodic shape can be built by stacking sines. A square wave is the fundamental plus a quieter copy at three times the frequency, plus an even quieter one at five, and so on: only odd harmonics, each amplitude one over the harmonic number.
That's additive synthesis: start with nothing, add sines until the shape you want appears. It's expensive (each partial is its own oscillator) but unmatched for anything that needs surgical control over harmonic content. Pipe organs work this way. So do bells, FM-style metallics, and the hyper-detailed pads in modern soft synths.
Subtractive: carve it down
The other direction: start rich and remove. A sawtooth has every harmonic; a lowpass filter rolls off everything above a chosen cutoff. Sweep that cutoff and you get the most familiar synth gesture in recorded music: the filter sweep.
Subtractive synthesis is the bones of every Moog patch, every TB-303 acid line, every classic synth lead. It works because a saw is the richest place to start. You can't filter what isn't there.
Try it: match the sound
Three knobs: wave, filter, envelope. Hit play on the target, then build the same sound from your three choices. Submit and the system grades you. Three out of three is the right recipe; anything less and you'll see which dimension you missed. There are no points beyond the round, but the round itself is the point: every sound is a recipe.
Shape first
Most beginners reach for filters and effects before fixing the source. That's backwards. If the wave is wrong, no filter rescues it. If the wave is right, a single envelope and a touch of reverb is often the whole patch.
Start with the shape. Pick deliberately. Then everything downstream becomes a small decision instead of a rescue mission.
